CCEU EVENT: Why Clients Don't Change: Understanding the Survival Identity Behind Repeated Behaviors

CCEU Event: Why Clients Don't Change: Understanding the Survival Identity Behind Repeated Behaviors

Most coaches have experienced it.
A client receives powerful feedback. They gain a breakthrough insight. They commit to doing something differently.
Then the next high-stakes conversation, leadership challenge, or stressful situation arrives—and they do exactly what they've always done.
It's easy to assume the issue is motivation, accountability, or willpower.
But what if the real challenge lies deeper?

Join the ICF Washington State Chapter for an engaging session with researcher, executive coach, and author Dr. Amy Chiang, who will introduce coaches to the concept of Survival Identity—the hidden identity-level patterns that often drive behavior, leadership, and decision-making under pressure.

Why This Matters Now
Organizations today are investing heavily in leadership development, coaching, and culture transformation. Yet many leaders continue to struggle with recurring patterns that persist despite increased self-awareness and good intentions.
Clients may understand exactly what needs to change, yet find themselves repeating the same reactions, communication styles, or leadership behaviors when the stakes are high.
Understanding why this happens is becoming increasingly important for coaches who want to support deeper and more sustainable transformation.
According to Dr. Chiang's research, many of these patterns are rooted not simply in mindset, but in what she calls Survival Identity—the adaptive strategies and identity structures developed over time that become embedded within the nervous system and automatically activated under pressure.

What You'll Learn
In this thought-provoking session, coaches will explore:
  • Why insight and awareness alone are often insufficient for lasting change
  • How identity-level patterns influence behavior, leadership, and decision-making
  • The relationship between the nervous system and recurring behavioral patterns
  • How Survival Identity shows up in coaching conversations
  • New ways to help clients understand what may be driving their reactions under pressure
You will leave with:
  • A fresh perspective on why clients get stuck
  • A practical framework for understanding the identity layer beneath behavior
  • New language to help clients make sense of recurring patterns
  • Insights that can deepen your coaching conversations and interventions
  • A greater understanding of how lasting transformation occurs
