Neuroscience of Learning

Are your employees, clients having hard time retaining the learning? Do you want to increase effectiveness of your coaching/trainings?
When we’re coaching or training, we are facilitating learning. Ideally, learning that will last. As coaches and training professionals, we are often involved in leadership development more generally, as well. Neuroscience reveals what makes for lasting learning across these and other formats.
The research can be boiled down to four principles that we can act on in any learning context. The principles are that: 1) a single focus of attention is critical; 2) the learner must generate his or her own connections to existing knowledge; 3) emotions will help; and 4) it is necessary to come back to the content at a later date and revisit it.
These are principles that we can use as coaches and training professionals to help our clients embed their learning from our coaching sessions or from other development activities, for the long term. They also serve as principles for helping our clients be successful in the learning they must do outside of our sessions with them. In this webinar, we will explore the neuroscience behind these four principles, also focusing on their useful application for learning in any context.

Josh Davis is the Director of Research and Lead Professor for the NeuroLeadership Institute. He guides the Institute’s work in translating basic science research for business and leadership use, and drives strategy for new research content.
He lectures frequently both for the NeuroLeadership Institute classes, and at conferences and organizational events worldwide. He received his bachelor’s from Brown University, and his Ph.D. from Columbia University.
His career began in engineering, from which he transitioned to academic teaching and research about the mind and brain. His research has dealt with adaptive emotional state control and mind-body connections. He has received funding from the National Science Foundation, and he has taught at New York University, Columbia University, and Barnard College. He is also a member of the Barnard College Department of Psychology.
