1.5 Core Competency CCEUs
Hosted by ICF Washington State

Description of Course

When we start our coach training, we’re told two things: to leave our personal experiences out of the coaching conversation, and that it’s inevitable our clients will bring to us the very things we have worked on ourselves. When the latter happens, what do we do about the former? There may be times when your experience intersects with your client so directly, it almost feels irresponsible not to share. How do you decide what to do? What do the ICF Core Competencies have to tell us when it comes to coaching presence, creating awareness, self-management, and building trust and intimacy? And how do you handle it if a boundary has been blurred or even obliterated?

This interactive webinar offers guidance for reflecting on your personal story and boundaries, and determining what, when, and how to share with clients. Through the presentation of video interviews with a diverse group of coaches, real-life examples, and peer learning, participants will start to gain personal clarity on what it means for them to create a coaching container that’s in service to the client while still bringing their full selves to the partnership.

Session content includes:

  • An overview of the role vulnerability and transparency play in our coaching and where we encounter tension
  • A series of short video interviews with several coaches in which they each share a time when the personal and professional intersected, and how they handled the situation
  • Exploration of what is considered “appropriately authentic” in a range of coaching scenarios
  • Opportunities for participants to evaluate their narrative and notice where it might benefit from more or less vulnerability

What you will learn:

Participants who actively engage with the content and one another will leave with:

1.     Deeper awareness of their coaching presence, style, and gifts

2.     Tools for creating clarity on if, when, and how to incorporate personal experiences into their role as coach

3.     Practical strategies for self-management to help navigate tricky boundary issues
