Our topic this month is Action Learning—a team-based coaching approach to working on challenges and issues that is useful for facilitating peer coaching groups of 4-8 people. Leading the session will be Diane Vreyens—a Senior Action Learning Coach and Leadership Coach.
By the end of the meeting, you’ll learn about Action Learning (AL), experience a practice session, and discuss applications.
About Action Learning sessions
The focus of the sessions is both learning/reflection and taking action. In addition, the learning is focused at the individual, team (and often, organization) levels, both "out there" and "here and now."
Here’s how it works. In an AL session, an individual member gets a dedicated timeslot to focus on a challenge or issue they are facing. Their fellow group members then coach them on that issue. The AL coach's role is not to participate in the coaching of the individual, but rather to coach the team on their 'performance' as a team in working on the issue. Thus, when the AL coach sees an opportunity for learning, s/he facilitates an in-the-moment "time out of time" learning intervention with the group mid-process. During these learning interventions, the group members reflect on how they are doing in working on the issue, on their understanding of the issue, and on how they can perform better when they resume. At the end of the session, the AL coach also leads a reflective debrief.
