Business Planning for the New Year: How to Create Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) as Coach Entrepreneurs

Our journeys as entrepreneurs begin and evolve in many forms. Often, the visionary call to do this coaching work comes first, before the “how will we make it real” business plan. We might stay busy with long to-do lists, yet struggle to know if our activities drive true progress so that we can do the work we want to do in a viable way. As independent business owners, how might we set goals, prioritize activities, and measure meaningful progress in the face of doubt, distraction, and isolation?

The planning framework known as Objectives and Key Results (commonly referred to as OKRs) developed at Intel in the 1970s and is used frequently by corporations to increase focus, accelerate progress, and align efforts across large organizations. Coach Barbara Visser began experimenting with OKRs as a method for practical inspiration and self-accountability as she launched her solo coaching business during the 2020 pandemic, described in this LinkedIn article. She discovered that using OKRs for her small business provided structure, motivation, and momentum to stay focused even when she got discouraged, distracted, or blocked.

In this “By Coaches, For Coaches” format, especially timed for the beginning of this new year, we will explore the value that setting OKRS may bring for us as coach entrepreneurs, gain real-time practice in how to set personalized and meaningful OKRs for your business, and consider ways to bring these OKRs to life in your ongoing business rhythms.
